Jim looked up from the post roast he was checking to eye Blair, suspiciously, as he walked in the door and hung up his coat. He barely held back a laugh, as Blair caught his stare and raised eyebrow, and gave him a sheepish grin in return. He was covered from head to toe in bits of glitter, glue, plastic holly leaves, pine needles, and macramé cord. "Arts and Crafts day?"
Blair chuckled, aware of how ridiculous he looked. "We were sharing traditions. Not all of the kids who come to the center are Christian, you know. They're all restless though, from being out of school. The staff had their hands full. So, we kept them busy, by having them all make wreaths to celebrate their own holidays and traditions."
"So, where's our wreath then?" They hadn't decorated for the holiday, yet, and Jim didn't actually think they would, but he couldn't resist teasing.
"Oh, man. That's... I didn't think... The center's kind of short of funds, you know, and they didn't have a lot of decorations, so, I let them hang mine up. The supplies were mostly donations, after all."
"Yeah, I saw that bag in your car the other day, Chief. I was just kidding, anyway. You know I don't like a lot of clutter around the place, and pine sap and blinking lights drive me nuts.
"I think it might be nice, though. Maybe, when we can pick up something - small and tasteful - to put up. Maybe have a little display of our own traditions - new ones."
"That'd be awesome. I know just the thing, and I wanted to go pick up something for the Angel tree, too, so we can do that, too. Liven this place up a bit," Blair began to babble excitedly.
"Sandburg," Jim said warningly.
Blair laughed and held his hands up, "Yeah, yeah, I get it. I'm going to go take a shower, before dinner, before you hang *me* off the balcony."
"Well, it would certainly liven up the place. Twenty minutes, Darwin."
"Merry Christmas to you, too, big guy."
"Merry Christmas."

Blair hunched down inside his winter coat, as the cool Cascade wind whipped around him. He could hear the sounds of the storefront Santas ringing their bells, and the tinny Christmas music being piped through speakers inside the stores that beckoned him with warm air and holiday cheer, but he resisted their draw.
This was the last place he wanted to be on Christmas Eve, but Simon had kicked him out of Jim's room at the hospital, and told him, in no uncertain terms, that he was expected at Simon's house for the party with the rest of the team that evening. He and Jim hadn't finished their Christmas shopping, when everything had fallen apart four days ago. So, he was trying to come up with a gift for the exchange at the party. However, he was having trouble getting into the holiday spirit.
The bells at St. Benedict's tolled the hour, and Blair glanced up at the bell tower, resenting the season's intrusion on his vigil. Peace on earth was a hard concept to reconcile with the greed that resulted in his partner getting shot during a botched robbery. Mass commercialism abounded; people fought over the latest toys, and very few stopped to drop a few coins in the swinging red cauldrons that lined the block, let alone volunteered to help their fellow man.
His spirit was low, and he hated feeling this way. He paused in front of the church, wishing for a little bit of hope, a sign that this was the season of miracles. After a moment, he snorted and shook his head, feeling foolish. What had he expected - a choir of angels descending from the heavens?
He had just started to walk away when his phone rang. It sounded like bells chiming in the air.
